With wins over visiting Robert Louis Stevenson and on the road in Watsonville against the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies, the Soledad High Lady Aztec volleyball team improved to 5-1 in Cypress Divisional play and 8-7 overall.

Soledad coach resigns
Frankie Berlanga, the four-time Mission Trail Athletic League Coach of the Year who led the Aztecs to two MTAL titles and a Central Coast Section Championship in 2016, resigned last Friday as the Soledad head coach.
King City takes gold
Four wins on Saturday earned the King City Lady Mustang volleyball team the championship of the Gold Division at Saturday’s Everett Alvarez Volleyball Tournament in Salinas.
Cross Country | Mustang boys win invitational
With five runners in the top six places the King City varsity boys cross country team easily won their division at Saturday’s Jackie Henderson Memorial Invitational hosted by North Monterey High School in Castroville. King City scored 17 points to easily defeat second place San Benito with 66 points. Soledad High placed fifth in the division.
Soledad alum named college soccer MVP
SOLEDAD — Soledad High graduate Belinda Ascencio led the Hartnell Panthers women’s soccer team to the Coast Conference championship, helping her team attain an 18-2-2 overall record.Â
For her leadership on the pitch, the 22-year-old forward was awarded the Coast Conference’s Most Valuable Player.

Aztecs track team competes in last MTAL championship
A sixth straight championship also meant an end of an era for the King City boys track and field team. The Mustangs won the Mission Trail Athletic League in what was the last championship meet for them in the MTAL as next year King City, Gonzales, Greenfield and Soledad will be members of the Pacific Coast Athletic League.
Soledad reaches CCS semifinals
Alexis Lopez scored on a pass from teammate Alexis Sanchez in the 12th minute of the second half as the host Soledad High Aztec boys soccer team defeated the Menlo School Knights 1-0 on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division III Playoffs.
