Aztecs edged out by Gilroy

A fumble in the last five minutes of the game prevented the Soledad Aztec football team from coming home with a victory over the host Gilroy High Mustangs.

Scholarship runners

Three South County high school runners were awarded scholarships for their accomplishments as runners and their work in the classroom by the Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners (WNLR).

Games rescheduled due to smoke

Heavy smoke that has spread from the Camp Fire in Butte County to much of Northern California, the Bay Area and the Tri-county area has forced the rescheduling of many Central Coast Section sporting events.

Aztecs track team competes in last MTAL championship

A sixth straight championship also meant an end of an era for the King City boys track and field team. The Mustangs won the Mission Trail Athletic League in what was the last championship meet for them in the MTAL as next year King City, Gonzales, Greenfield and Soledad will be members of the Pacific Coast Athletic League.

Verduzco to attend CSUMB

Gonzales High School and Hartnell College graduate Norma Verduzco will be attending Cal State Monterey Bay to continue her studies and pursue a spot on the Otter women’s soccer team.

South County football players took the field for one last time high school players last Friday at the 33rd Annual All-Star High School Football Game at Rabobank Football Stadium in Salinas. Six players from Soledad, two players from Greenfield, two from King City, and one from Gonzales High participated in the game.

King City continues solid play

With over half the league season completed, the King City Lady Mustangs are in second place in team standings with a 7-1 record. King City won two games last week, defeating the host Carmel Padres 3-1 and beating the Pacific Grove Breakers on the road.

Lady Aztecs beaten in fight for first place

In a game for first place in the Mission Trail Athletic League the Soledad Aztecs played well but were unable to come home with a win against the host Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates. Stevenson’s Ambreece Gaskins scored 21 points to lead the Pirates to the 55-48 win.

Wins over Robert Louis Stevenson and Marina last week helped the Soledad Lady Aztec softball improve to 2-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 6-4 overall. Soledad downed the visiting Stevenson Pirates 11-1 and completed the week with a 9-6 victory over the Mariners on the Aztec playing fields.

South County girls chosen for All-League team

Soledad High and King City High had two representatives on the Mission Trail Athletic League first-team. Greenfield High had one player on the first-team.
