Lady Aztecs fall to 3-6 in league after losses

SOLEDAD — The Soledad Aztec softball team fell to 3-6 in the Mission Trail Athletic League as they lost for the third straight time to league foes.

The Aztecs were beaten 12-2 by the Marina Mariners and were rocked 23-5 at home against the Santa Catalina Cougars. On Saturday Soledad lost a 1-0 game to Santa Maria on the road.

At CSUMB on April 17 against Marina, Skylah Fregoso was 2 x 2 and Victoria Canchola was 2 x 2 with a double, Lailah Vega added a basehit. Alize Duarte started at pitcher and took the loss.

“Lailah Vega has done a good job filling in for junior catcher Jenny Garcia,” said Soledad head coach Joel Ramirez. “Garcia is tough to duplicate as she was swinging a good bat before she got injured. Lailah is a freshman and has handled it pretty well.”

Against Santa Catalina Celeste Parra went 2 x 3 with a double and Evelina Ramirez, Skylah Fregoso, Sarah Gonzalez, Jenika Landeros, and Alynna Quezada all had hits for Soledad.

“The game got out of our reach early as Catalina picked up five runs in the first and 10 runs in the second inning,” said Coach Ramirez. “Starting pitcher Sarah Gonzalez did not make it out of the first inning.”

In Saturday’s loss to Santa Maria the host team scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a walk-off error. Alize Duarte pitched a one-hitter in the loss.

“This week will be even tougher as we have to play Carmel twice,” said Ramirez. “We have to put a good solid seven innings defensively and find a way to back on track offensively. We continue to face some good pitching but have to make better adjustments at the plate.”
