South County teams start season
Sportsmanship basketball games were played last week to kick of the season by the Soledad and Gonzales boys teams and the King City and Greenfield girls teams.
Athletes to compete at CCS semifinals
Track and field athletes from all four South County high schools will be running, throwing, and jumping on Saturday at the Central Coast Section Track and Field Semifinals at Gilroy High School.
Aztec boys beat KC, lose to Padres
Billy Hollman scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Soledad High Aztec boys basketball team to a 71-53 win over the King City Mustangs on Jan. 9 in King City. Beto Tinajero joined Hollman in double figures for Soledad, finishing with 14 points.
Runners compete in MTAL Center Meet
In a preview of the upcoming Mission Trail Athletic League Cross Country Championships, the Greenfield boys teams won the varsity boys, JV boys and frosh boys divisions.
Lady Mustangs shut down Gonzales, 18-0
The King City Lady Mustang softball team defeated MTAL rival Gonzales 18-0 in the last home game of the season and team’s Senior Night.
Wrestling | South County wrestlers place at Apple Cider
Led by three weight class winners, the Gonzales High wrestling team placed sixth overall at the Apple Cider Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Watsonville.
Aztecs win 2, while other local teams suffer losses
Two victories last week improved the Soledad High volleyball teams record to 3-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 5-3 overall. Other South County teams, however, suffered losses this past week.
King City frosh-soph win invitational title
With wins in four events and multiple points in many events the King City High frosh-soph boys track team won their division at the King City Lions’ and Young Farmers’ 74th Invitational Track Meet. Esteban Deniz led the Broncos with wins in the 1600 and 3200.
Local runners place at Salinas Valley Half Marathon and 5K race
Seven South County runners were among the top placers at Saturday’s Salinas Valley Half Marathon and 5K.
Greenfield Bruins win battle of bears
An early miscue for a touchdown was quickly forgotten on Saturday as the Greenfield High Bruins outscored the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies 48-0 the rest of the way in a 48-6 season-opener at Cabrillo College in Aptos.
