California condors headed to Central Coast for release in the wild
A group of the Peregrine Fund’s California condors will soon be unfurling their nine-and-a-half-foot wings to soar the skies of central California, but first they have to get from the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, all the way to central California, where the National Park Service and the Ventana Wildlife Society will release the condors from their respective sites at Pinnacles National Park and in Big Sur.
Youth learn about gang violence at annual summit in Salinas
The annual Gang Prevention Summit on Jan. 26 featured many speakers from law enforcement and from the Boys and Girls Club. This year there was also a special speaker, Juan “Johnny” Gomez, who was present when two of his relatives were victims of gang violence.

Soledad High student dies from fentanyl overdose
SOLEDAD — A Soledad High School senior who was set to graduate in June died this past weekend after ingesting a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Longtime South County doctor awarded France’s highest medal
In a ceremony Feb. 12 at the French Consulate in San Francisco, Dr. Duane Hyde — a longtime resident and family doctor of King City — was recognized for his service in World War II with the Legion of Honor medal, France’s highest order of merit for military and civil awards.
Salinas Valley Half Marathon returns this year
