Salinas hospital hosts Farmers’ Market every Friday

SUBMITTED ARTICLE

SALINAS — Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System’s Farmers’ Market kicked off its 2017-2018 season May 19. The Certified Farmers’ Market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers and other items, many of them organically grown by small-scale family farmers.

“We are proud to continue offering this Certified Farmers’ Market to the community,” says Pete Delgado, president/CEO of Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. “It’s a great way to encourage and promote healthy eating by bringing these choices directly to our patients, families, staff and neighbors.”

The Salinas Valley is known as the Salad Bowl of the World and unlike other parts of the country, many locally grown and harvested edibles are available year round. Eating and cooking fresh produce is part of a healthy lifestyle, which can reduce the risk of illness and disease.

People who receive CalFresh benefits (food stamps) and who use their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards at the Farmers’ Market can receive bonus money toward the purchase of fruits and vegetables. The Farmers’ Market is supported and funded by Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System.

The SVMHS Farmers’ Market takes place every Friday afternoon until Oct. 20, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., in the MRI parking lot of the hospital at the corner of Wilgart Way and East Romie Lane. Free valet parking is available in the parking garage on Wilgart Way.

For more information, call 831-759-1890 or visit svmh.com/farmersmarket.
