Leading Aztecs overwhelm opponents

SOLEDAD — In a week full of offense on the baseball fields, probably no team was as productive as the Mission Trail Athletic League leading Soledad High Aztecs.

Soledad won its 13th game of the season last week as they outscored league Robert Louis Stevenson in a pair of games and crushed visiting Everett Alvarez in a non-league contest.

The fireworks started on April 17 for the Aztecs as they demolished the Stevenson Pirates by a 23-5 tally. Soledad produced 14 hits and finished the game with 13 runs batted in.

Isaac Lopez led the hitting attack with five hits and eight RBI’s and Chris Villarreal, Aaron Rodriguez, and Ben Pajas had three hits apiece and combined to match Lopez’s RBI total of eight. Anthony Ramirez was the winning pitcher, getting in four innings of work.

Last Thursday the Aztecs hosted the Everett Alvarez Eagles and emerged with a 12-2 victory. Pajas made the most of his time on the pitching mound, earning the win with seven strikeouts in five innings. Rodriguez hit the ball hard with two doubles and two RBI’s and Ramirez added two hits and two RBI’s. Joel Barroso two hits and one RBI and Villarreal had one hit and three RBI’s.

In the final game of the week on Friday against host Stevenson, Rodriguez had another strong hitting game with three hits and Pajas contributed with two hits. Andru Holguin earned his sixth pitching victory of the season as Soledad improved to 10-1-1 in league after the 8-4 win.

Soledad (13-4-1 overall) played the Marina Mariners on the Monterey Peninsula yesterday, play the Harbor Pirates tomorrow in Santa Cruz, and complete the week with a home game with the Mariners.
