SOUTH COUNTY — After 14 years with the Monterey County Free Libraries, Jayanti Addleman is stepping down from her position as library director.

In honor of Addleman’s service to the residents of Monterey County, a special celebration was held by the Friends of the Greenfield Library and the City of Greenfield at the Greenfield Memorial Hall on Jan. 6. The celebration brought together librarians from Greenfield, King City, Soledad and others, along with community members.

“She has us looking at things from a different perspective,” said Greenfield Branch Manager Dawn Vest.

Addleman was recognized with awards from the City of Soledad through Councilmember Anna Velazquez, the City of Greenfield through Mayor Pro Tem Yanely Martinez and a representative from Assemblymember Robert Rivas’ office.

“The library is not just the library, it is not just confined to one room, it goes beyond that,” Martinez said. “That’s the true work of librarians, they inspire.”

Addleman has been hired as the new director of library services for the City of Hayward, beginning Jan. 14.

“It’s hard to say what this means to me,” Addleman said. “Monterey County was home.”

She said the branches of Monterey County Free Libraries are very different, but they work together to serve the communities around them. Library branches are located in Aromas, Big Sur, Las Palmas/River Road, Carmel Valley, Castroville, Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Marina, Pajaro, Prunedale, San Ardo, San Lucas, Seaside and Soledad.
