County supervisor applauds new drinking water program

SUBMITTED ARTICLE

SALINAS — Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo applauded a first-of-its-kind drinking water replacement program between the Salinas Basin Agricultural Stewardship Group, LLC, and the State Water Resources Control Board and the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board that was announced earlier this month.

The new temporary pilot program will provide drinking water to disadvantaged communities and families in the Salinas Valley who have contaminated water with high levels of nitrates.

“This is a first-of-its-kind effort to provide safe and clean drinking water to our disadvantaged families impacted by nitrate contamination,” said Alejo, former chairman of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee. “… I’m proud to see a collaborative approach come out of the Salinas Valley. It can be a model for other areas in the state that are confronting similar challenges with nitrates.”
