Aztecs, Mustangs play 2 in league

SOUTH COUNTY — The Soledad High Aztec varsity baseball team is 1-0-1 to start the Mission Trail Athletic League as they defeated King City 9-7 at home and played to a 2-2 tie with the Mustangs last Friday on the road.

In the first game of the home and away series Ben Pajas earned the pitching victory for Soledad. Joel Barroso had two hits and three runs batted in, Pajas helped his own cause with two hits and one RBI, and Chris Villarreal added two basehits. Jeovani Santoyo led the Mustang attack with two hits and five RBI’s and Cody Perez added two hits.

The Friday game in King City was suspended because of darkness. Brian Lopez pitched eight innings for the Mustangs. Cedric Perez led King City with two hits.

Soledad will have a road game with Gonzales today and plays host to the Spartans on Friday.

King City’s record is 2-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 in league. The Mustangs will play two home games with Trinity Christian beginning today.

Gonzales High is 1-1 in the MTAL after a 12-0 home win last week against Robert Louis Stevenson and a 5-4 loss to the Pirates at Pebble Beach. Gonzales plays Soledad this week.

Greenfield High began league with a 2-1 loss to Pacific Grove and home away series with a 4-2 victory over the Breakers.

Greenfield opened the week with a 7-2 non-league win over North Salinas. The Bruins host league-leading Carmel today and will play the Padres in Carmel on Friday.

The Soledad softball team played three games last week, falling 7-6 to Alisal, losing 8-4 to San Lorenzo Valley, and beating the Greenfield Lady Bruins 11-1 on Saturday in a non-league contest.

Sarah Gonzalez hit a homerun in the loss to the SLV Cougars. In the win over Greenfield Evelina Ramirez and Jennifer Garcia hit two hit a piece to lead Soledad. Gonzalez earned the pitching win with relief help by Alize Duarte. The King City Lady Mustangs played two games last week and lost 6-2 to Alisal in Salinas and lost 8-5 to the Trinity Christian Warriors.
