SOUTH COUNTY — Two people were rescued Sunday evening after their pickup truck got stuck while attempting to cross the Arroyo Seco River near Greenfield.

At about 5:05 p.m. on March 25, Cal Fire officials along with Greenfield and Soledad firefighters responded to a report of two people trapped in the bed of a truck in the middle of the Arroyo Seco River in the area of Arroyo Seco Road and Cedar Avenue.

Officials said the water was about 4 feet deep and flowing at a fast pace. First responders determined that a helicopter was needed for the rescue.

Cal Fire Copter 406, from Bear Valley Helitack Base, arrived on scene and rigged the helicopter for a hoist rescue.

“This technical exercise requires specialized rescue skills that the staff of Copter 406 train for regularly,” said Cal Fire in a news release.

A firefighter was lowered by a mechanical hoist from the helicopter and lifted the subjects from the pickup, one at a time. The rescue took about 15 minutes from the helicopter’s arrival.

The subjects were flown to the shore to be assessed for injuries before being released.
