Volleyball | South County weekly roundup Oct. 24

SOUTH COUNTY — In games last week, the King City Lady Mustangs lost in five games to Santa Catalina and won in five games against Christopher High School.

In the game with Santa Catalina, Grace Shepherd had 31 kills, 23 digs, two aces and one block. Nancy Andrade added eight kills with 29 digs and four aces. Ivy Hearne had five kills, five digs, and finished the game with 18 assists. Jalen Mendez had three kills and two blocks and Alexia Head added 20 digs and had one Ace. Kayla Silva contributed with seven digs, four aces and 28 assists.

In the Christopher game, Shepherd had a game-high 37 kills, 16 digs, four aces and four blocks. Mendez had double-digits in kills with 12 and had four digs. Andrade led the team with 25 digs at libero and added two aces and three assists. Hearne added seven kills, five digs and 24 assists. Silva had 29 assists with four digs. Iylea Carpenter, Vanessa Wheeler, and Jasmine Guillen combined for three kills, five digs, and three blocks.

On Saturday, the Lady Mustangs did some team bonding by taking part in the sixth annual Fallen Heroes 5K Run at Fort Ord.

“It was a great team bonding event for us,” said King City head coach Christine Luna. “We took part in something that is bigger than us and supported a cause. It was a very fun day for all of us.”

King City hosted San Benito (Hollister) on Monday and will travel to Watsonville to battle the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs today.

Genensis Guerrero had 10 kills, nine digs and five aces in the Gonzales volleyball team’s four-set win over Stevenson. Paulina Rives and Bryanna Rivas combined for 37 assists and Madisyn Schweitzer had 16 kills and six aces.

Gonzales completed the week with a home loss to the Gilroy Mustangs. Guerrero finished with 15 kills and 14 digs and Schweitzer had six kills and four blocks. Perez and Jazmin Useda combined for 12 kills

“The last few weeks I have seen the fight in our team that I’ve been looking for since the beginning,” said Gonzales head coach Desiree Baltazar. “They have dug themselves out from being behind and show perseverance and grit.”

Gonzales hosted Anzar on Monday and will complete the season today by hosting Watsonville.

Soledad High had a good week with wins over Watsonville and Stevenson. The Lady Aztecs beat Watsonville 25-23, 25-17, 13-25 and 25-16, and beat the Pirates 25-15, 25-18 and 25-10. Soledad hosted Pajaro Valley on Monday and will host the North Monterey Condors tonight.

Greenfield High lost in three games to Kirby and plays at home today with the York School.
