The 32nd annual Big Sur International Marathon is Sunday, April 30. The 26.2-mile foot race, a major sporting event on California’s Central Coast, necessitates the temporary closure of California Highway 1 from south of Carmel to Big Sur for a half day.

Fire district obtains traffic safety grant
The South Monterey County Fire Protection District (SOMOCO) and the City of Soledad Fire Department partnered for a regional traffic safety grant and were awarded $70,000 for the purchase of electric powered extrication equipment with funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Schools re-evaluate safety procedures
Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield and King City school districts are working on changing safety procedures to ensure student safety.
