South County teams start season

SOUTH COUNTY — Sportsmanship basketball games were played last week to kick of the season by the Soledad and Gonzales boys teams and the King City and Greenfield girls teams. Soledad and Gonzales played at Soledad High, King City played in Salinas against Notre Dame, and Greenfield played at home against Pajaro Valley of Watsonville.

At Soledad Billy Holman scored 17 points to lead the Aztecs to a 50-42 victory over the Gonzales Spartans. Holman scored seven points in the first half and ten points in the second half for Soledad. Gonzales led early but were unable to contain Holman and the Aztecs.

Isaac Lopez just missed double figures with nine points, Gabriel Burgoz added seven points, and Adrian Martinez finished with five for the Soledad scorers. Pablo Villasenor led Gonzales with 10 points and Josiah Rios had eight points. Freddy Mendoza and Xavier Cervantes contributed with seven and six points respectively.

In games this week the Aztecs played yesterday in Salinas against Alisal High and travel to Santa Cruz County tomorrow to play the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars in Felton. Gonzales played last night in King City and will not play again until a December 5th game in Watsonville against Pajaro Valley.

The King City Lady Mustangs won in overtime last week, defeating the Spirits of Notre Dame, 53-49. King City outscored Notre Dame 7-3 in the overtime period. Megan Flores had a double-double for King City with 18 points and 20 rebounds and Delany Carroll finished with 13 points. Nancy Andrade just missed double figures in scoring with nine points and pulled down seven rebounds. Mikayla Davis added five points and three rebounds.

King City played last night at Seaside and will host Templeton tomorrow night at 6:30 Yazmin Solis scored 14 points and Maria Hernandez had 13 points in the Greenfield Bruins 47-45 loss to Pajaro Valley. Greenfield host Notre Dame on Monday and play in Santa Cruz tonight against the Harbor High Pirates.
