South County teams on the pitch

SOUTH COUNTY — Three of the four boys soccer teams from South County were victorious on the soccer pitch and two girls teams won games in non-league play last week. This is the final week of non-league games for the local teams.

  

BOYS

The defending Mission Trail Athletic League champion Gonzales High Spartans improved to 2-2 with a home game against Anzar and an away game against Palma in Salinas. The Spartans beat Anzar on Monday December 4 by a 5-0 tally and two day later downed the Chieftains, 3-1.

Erik Mata, Nazareth Amador, Enrique Melena, Jesus Alcantar, and Edwin Arias scored the goals against Anzar. In the game with Palma Erik Mata, Andres Virgen, and Nazareth Amador scored goals. Gonzales concluded the non-league schedule yesterday against Salinas High School at the Pit.

“We are playing better as a team,” said Gonzales head coach Juan Flores. “We started off slow and now it’s starting to look like we got it together.”

Soledad is 3-0-1 after a 2-0 shutout win at home against the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies. The Soledad goals came from Javier Lugo and Alexis Ortiz.

“We play Alvarez away on Tuesday,” said Aztec head coach Reyes Mendoza. “That game should be a great match up.”

The Aztecs had a busy schedule as they played yesterday against Everett Alvarez, travel to Salinas tomorrow for a game with Palma and play their final game of 2017 on Dec. 19 in Salinas against Alisal Trojans.

King City Mustangs are 1-2-1 as they beat the Harbor Pirates 4-2 and lost 2-0 to the Soquel Knights. Luis Escalante, Leo Lopez and Bryan Martinez scored goals in the win over the Knights. The Mustangs play Friday in Santa Cruz County against Scotts Valley Falcons.

Greenfield High fell to 0-2 as they lost 4-1 to the Palma Chieftains. Henry Flores scored the lone Bruin goal. Greenfield played on Monday in San Juan Bautista with Anzar, played yesterday in Cambria against Coast Union, and finish the week tomorrow at North Monterey County in Castroville. The Mission Trail Athletic League will begin on the second week of January for the four local teams.

  

GIRLS

The Greenfield girls soccer team went 1-1 last week with a 13-1 victory at home with Anzar and a 2-0 loss to the Everett Alvarez Eagles. In the win against Anzar Katie Martinez and Julia Carrasco scored four goals apiece, Dulce Avalos scored three goals, and Delilah Rocha added a single goal. The Lady Bruins played yesterday at Coast Union and play tomorrow at home with Gonzales.

King City is still looking for its first win as the Lady Mustangs are 0-3-1 with two losses and a tie at the Watsonville Soccer Tournament. King City lost 7-2 to Watsonville, were shutout 4-0 against Pacific Collegiate, and played to a 0-0 tie with North Monterey County. The Lady Mustangs hosted the Condors on Monday and play at North Salinas tomorrow win Salinas.

Gonzales is 1-3 in non-league after a 1-0 win at home against Robert Louis Stevenson and a 8-1 setback against North Salinas. Susy Tejeda scored the winning goal against Stevenson and Ashley Ochoa was credited with an assist. Amy Aceves. Gonzales plays at Greenfield tomorrow.

The defending MTAL champion Soledad Lady Aztecs are 1-3 as they lost a pair of games to Monte Vista Christian and Santa Cruz in the Watsonville Soccer Tournament. The MVC shutout Soledad 4-0 and the Santa Cruz Cardinals blanked the Aztecs, 7-0. Soledad will try to get back on the winning track as they hosted North Salinas yesterday and will host North Monterey County tomorrow.
