SOLEDAD — Soledad Salvation Army will host a craft fair on July 1, showcasing local artists from Soledad, Gonzales and Greenfield.
“We have some people who do crocheting, knitting and quilting,” Community Coordinator Cindy Avelino said. “We have some jewelry makers too.”
The Salvation Army Craft Fair will include Nu Laroo Clothing line as well as some plant sellers. The Craft Fair will be in the parking lot of Liberty Chapel, 274 Kidder St.
Should any of the event goers get hungry a swiss sausage sack lunch will be for sale and a bake sale will be ongoing.
“We have a grant that pays for our food, but we don’t have funding for things like toiletries,” Avelino said.
Avelino has been a part of the Soledad Salvation Army since September. The Soledad location just sent 37 children to Camp Redwood Glen in Santa Cruz this past week and the campers returned June 24. The camp was free and, according to Avelino, most of the children had never been out of Soledad, let alone to a camp. The trip was free due to a grant the Salvation Army received for more than $8,000.
“I am blown away by what this little office is doing,” Avelino said. “We see all kinds of situations here. We help with food, basic hygiene items, help homeless with personnel hygiene items, allow them to warm food here, we have a clothing pantry and more.”
The Craft Fair is just one of the Salvation Army’s yearly fundraisers, with its largest fundraiser, the bell ringing, during the winter months. According to Avelino, 60 percent of the Salvation Army’s income comes from bell ringing.
Soledad Salvation Army is at 179 Main St.
