Scholarship runners

JESUS CAMPOS, ROMAN MUNOZ and EVELIN MEZA

SOUTH COUNTY — Three South County high school runners were awarded scholarships for their accomplishments as runners and their work in the classroom by the Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners (WNLR). The WNLR is a group of about 300 local runners that meet regularly to run in the Monterey and Salinas area.

The WNLR holds fundraising events throughout the year to earn money to give out scholarships to high school runners that are standout distance runners in cross country or track and field and are nominated by their coaches.

The WNLR scholarships are also based on leadership, community service, and need. This year the WNLR is giving out a total of $10,250 of scholarships, with scholarships varying from $500 to $2,000.

The eight college bound runners this year include Jesus Campos of King City High School; Roman Munoz of King City High School, Evelin Meza of Greenfield High School; Kayla Clayton of Salinas High School; Alfredo Mejia of Salinas High School; Isaias Rodriguez of Seaside High School; Jorge Rodriguez of Alisal High School; and Anna Stefanou of Pacific Grove High School.

Campos and Munoz were two of the top runners in the Mission Trail Athletic League in cross country and track and field. Campos just missed a trip to the State Meet this year in cross country and Munoz was a three-time CCS champion in Division IV cross country.

Munoz was also a two-time State qualifier in track and field as a 1600 runner. Campos and Munoz will be members of the Monterey Peninsula College Lobo cross country and track and field teams.

Meza, had a stellar career at Greenfield with multiple trips to the State Meet as a cross country runner as an individual and as a member of the Lady Bruins State qualifying teams. Meza will be attending San Jose State University as a distance runner.
