SCAR’s 2nd Annual Dog Days of Summer a howling success

Dogs take center stage at paw-some park event

SOLEDAD — South County Animal Rescue (SCAR) hosted its Second Annual Dog Days of Summer community event Sept. 28 at Cesar Chavez Park in Soledad.

“Last year the SCAR Board scrambled at the last minute to put together this event because we felt that South County needed to have a community event that allowed families to bring their four-legged family members with them,” said Carla Stewart, SCAR Board president and Soledad city councilmember. “The response from the community last year was overwhelmingly positive, and we are so pleased this has now become an annual community event.”

This year the SPCA for Monterey County and Peace of Mind Dog Rescue brought adoptable animals to the event, in addition to those from SCAR.

Stewart said there was an increase in vendors as well, ranging from food to merchandise to local nonprofits providing informational items to the community.

Sen. Anna Caballero also stopped by to partake in the event.

In addition, this year Soledad Police Department’s K-9 Huro and handler Officer Walter Tinay provided a live bite demonstration. Huro is trained to detect illegal narcotics and apprehend fleeing or hiding suspects, and is also the only police K-9 in Monterey County trained for tracking.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who attended and participated in our Second Annual Dog Days of Summer community event,” Stewart said. “We are so pleased to be able to provide a community venue for our families to bring their furry family members to, and are proud to serve our South County community.”

The date of the Third Annual Dog Days of Summer event will be announced soon, Stewart said.
