SOLEDAD — As Soledad High School students returned to school last week, they were met with orange cones and parts of the street lanes blocked off.
The reason behind Gabilan Drive being blocked was because of Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) upgrading portions of the natural gas distribution system that serves homes and businesses.
“We will be working on Gabilan Drive between Benito Avenue and Main Street, as well as Inca Drive, Aztlan Circle, Montezuma Drive and Tolteca Circle in Soledad,” said Mayra Tostado, representative for PG&E’s Marketing and Communications.
According to Tostado, the work started mid August and will continue until December. The schedule could change due to weather and other factors affecting safe working conditions.
PG&E crews will assess and replace portions of the natural gas distribution lines mostly located under the street or on private property. If work will take place on residents’ property, Tostado said a local PG&E representative will contact them prior to starting.
The work to the natural gas distribution lines could also mean upgrading gas meters.
“Prior to the start of work, and to ensure we have adequate space to safely install our gas lines away from other underground utilities, a qualified contractor will determine the sewer location and use a video camera to inspect it,” Tostado said. “The inspection will also confirm important safety information to ensure that sewer service and existing gas service lines do not conflict.”
Throughout the construction, PG&E contractor trucks and other equipment will be visible and all personnel are required to carry photo identification.
While the lines are being emptied for replacement, there may be loud, steady noise and a natural gas smell. Tostado said this is normal while crews are working, but if any residents have concerns, they can call 800-743-5000.
There may be a temporary service interruption during the connection of the new gas line.
