SOLEDAD — Wins over Robert Louis Stevenson and Marina last week helped the Soledad Lady Aztec softball improve to 2-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 6-4 overall. Soledad downed the visiting Stevenson Pirates 11-1 and completed the week with a 9-6 victory over the Mariners on the Aztec playing fields.
“We had nine walks as a team which led to big innings,” said Soledad head coach Joel Ramirez. “We took advantage of plate appearances with runners in scoring position and took care of the ball on the defensive side.”
Sarah Gonzalez picked up the win going three innings and giving up zero runs. The Lady Aztecs score three runs in the first inning, four in the second inning, three runs in the fourth inning, and one in the fifth to complete the game by the mercy rule. Jenny Garcia had a bases loaded double to clear the base in the second inning to cap a four-run inning. Evelina Ramirez went 2 x 4 with a double and four runs scored. Skylah Fregoso finished 1 x 4 with three runs batted in.
In Friday’s win over Marina the Lady Aztecs came back after trailing by a 5-2 score. Evelina Ramirez led off with a double and back to hits by Fregoso and Jenny Garcia had the host team within one run a 5-4. A double by Angela Mora and a two-run homerun by Jennika Landeros finished off a six-run inning.
In the sixth inning Soledad picked up another run with a base hit by Ramirez and a triple by Fregoso. Marina came up trailing by three runs but stranded two runners on in the seventh inning.
“We played a rain-out game with Pacific Grove on Monday and visit Santa Catalina today. On Friday we travel to Carmel. It is going to be a tough week traveling to the Peninsula three times in a week and facing tough teams,” said Coach Ramirez. “This is where being the only South County school in a league full of Peninsula teams gets and is going to be a challenge of our toughness.”
