SOLEDAD — Billy Hollman scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Soledad High Aztec boys basketball team to a 71-53 win over the King City Mustangs on Jan. 9 in King City. Beto Tinajero joined Hollman in double figures for Soledad, finishing with 14 points.
In the JV game the Broncos defeated the Aztecs 55-33. Ashton Headley led the Broncos with 10 points.
“It was a terrible shooting game,” said Soledad head JV coach Kevin Pena. “We got the looks we wanted but just couldn’t finish.”
In the freshman game the Ponies defeated Soledad, 50-33. Johnny Carrillo led Soledad in scoring with 15 points and made three 3-point baskets and Jesus Ruacho had five points with one 3-point basket.
Two nights later the Aztec varsity were beaten 77-53 by the Carmel Padres to fall to 2-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League standings and 5-8 overall. Billy Hollman scored 15 points to the lead Soledad and Gabriel Burgoz and Shaq Hollman added 10 points apiece respectively.
Soledad lost the JV game to Carmel 63-34 and were led in scoring by Jarren Arreola’s 12 points. In the freshman contest Carrillo had four 3-point baskets and finished with 14 points. Isaac Ventura added six points and Lorenzo Santistevan had five points with one 3-point basket.
The Soledad teams travel to Pebble Beach today to play the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates. On Friday the Aztec teams will host the Pacific Grove Breakers.
