SOLEDAD — Chevron and Monterey Peninsula Foundation selected Main Street Middle School as the recipient of a $20,000 grant through the 2018 Chevron Eagles for Education Program.
The grant was awarded to the Main Street Middle School MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science and Achievement) program.
“I applied for the grant to help with materials and supplies for our engineering projects and for STEM-related field trips,” said MESA adviser Elva Garcia of the school’s science department.
The donation is part of a collaboration with PURE Insurance Championship. Chevron invests in the youth by providing programs for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There is also a STEM Zone that teaches students and teachers as well as parents about hands-on learning in those categories through sports.
Students can make videos to practice their news reporting skills, test their reflexes, analyze golf swings and other activities to improve the way they play sports.
“The Monterey Peninsula Foundation has been a great supporter of the Main Street Middle School MESA program by allowing us to visit the STEM Zone at the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach for several years now,” Garcia said. “They generously provide transportation grants, which make the field trip possible.”
Garcia was grateful to the school district as well for supporting the MESA program at Main Street.
