SOLEDAD — Playing without a few key players and forced to move their best receiver to quarterback, the Soledad High football team could not generate much offense in a 53-0 loss on Saturday to the undefeated Carmel Padres.
The host Padres improved to 7-0 overall, and the Aztecs are 0-6 after the loss.
“Playing without our starting quarterback really hurt us,” said Soledad head coach Eric Rodriguez. “There were a few players out and because of that we are not playing as a team right now. Our goal right now is just to get a win this season because it is important to have a starting place for next year.
“With Angel Olivas moving to quarterback in place of Gabriel Florez we lost some offensive options. We have a long ride this Friday to play Scotts Valley and we need to be able to generate some offense against them. Getting Florez back who missed the game for a family emergency will give us a better offense scheme,” Rodriguez continued.
The Padres led 24-0 at halftime and never looked back. Carmel is playing some consistent football this season averaging over 40 points a game.
Carmel is 3-0 in the Mission Division of the Pacific Coast Athletic League and has scored over 50 points three times this season.
