Monterey County Free Libraries receives $100K grant

SUBMITTED ARTICLE

MONTEREY COUNTY — The Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries recently received a $100,000 grant from Monterey Peninsula Foundation to support countywide literacy efforts through the libraries over two years.

Funds will be used to support the Homework Centers and Summer Reading programs that are offered free to students at library branches operated by Monterey County Free Libraries throughout the county. The goal of the Homework Centers and Summer Reading programs is to improve overall literacy for youth in Monterey County by encouraging children to read and receive assistance with homework, both in-person and through the online tutoring service Brainfuse.

“Thanks to the support from Monterey Peninsula Foundation, we will be able to increase our services and offer extended hours for those Homework Centers with high demand. This will make a big difference for the children seeking homework help,” said Julia Foster, executive director for the Foundation of Monterey County Free Libraries.

Monterey Peninsula Foundation awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process.

“Monterey Peninsula Foundation is committed to funding organizations and programs that demonstrate the greatest positive effect in our community and we are pleased to be a partner of the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries,” said Director of Philanthropy Mary Gunn.
