SOUTH COUNTY — The Soledad High boy soccer team will play in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division II Playoffs today at 7 pm in Soledad.
The Aztecs earned the #4 seed in the Division II and will host the #13 seed Pioneer High Mustangs. Soledad finished second in the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 9-0-3 record and were 14-1-4 record.
“We should be fine and ready to play,” said Soledad head coach Reyes Mendoza. “Gonzales has a tough task ahead of them also. Hopefully we they win as I am rooting for the MTAL.”
Gonzales was seeded #6 in Division II and will host Sacred Heart Cathedral, the #11 seed at 3:30 today at Dick Force Stadium.
“The only thing I know about Pioneer is that they play very defensive,” said Mendoza. “They are physical, and they will play counter against us.”
The winners from today’s opening round will play on Saturday with time and place to be determined.
In the final week of MTAL play the King City Mustang soccer team began the week with a 2-0 loss to league champion Gonzales on Monday night. King City rebounded from the loss to beat the visiting Carmel Padres 4-3 on Wednesday night.
The winning goal was scored in the final minute of play. Scoring for the Mustangs were Marco Cuellar (two goals), and single goals by Oscar Mendez and Daniel Gonzalez.
The win by King City gave the chance to play Coastal League champion Pacific Collegiate in the play-in game for a CCS berth last Friday. The Mustangs lost by a 3-1 score to the Pumas in penalty kicks. The regulation game finished in a 2-2 tie and goals were scored by Marco Cuellar and Daniel Gonzalez.
King City finished in third place in the MTAL.
The Greenfield boys began the week with a 7-1 win over the Marina Mariners. Scoring two goals apiece for the Bruins were Ivan Lucio, Gerardo Gomez, and Sergio Flores. Lucio was credited with two assists and Gomez and Flores had single assists. Jose Hernandez and Sergio Carrasco scored solo goals and Erik Montoya added two assists.
The Bruins finished the MTAL season in fourth place and hosted Gonzales in the final game of the season. The Spartans scored on a first half goal by Erik Mata and hung on for the win. Defensive standouts for Greenfield were Simon Edeza and Marcos Trujillo.
The Greenfield JV team beat Gonzales by a 2-1 score with goals by Javier Torres and Carlos Martinez. Assists were credited to Carlos Martinez and Isaias Solorio.
GIRLS
The Greenfield girls finished in the MTAL standings and completed the league with a 6-1 win over Santa Catalina and a 2-0 loss to Pacific Collegiate. On Monday against Santa Catalina Katie Martinez scored three goals and had two assists. Dulce Avalos scored two goals with three assists and Julia Carrasco scored one goal with one assist.
The loss to host Pacific Collegiate dropped Greenfield to fourth place and out of a playoff berth.
King City finished fifth in the MTAL after a 1-0 loss to Carmel and a 2-2 tie with Pacific Collegiate. Jatziri Gaxiola scored one goal against the Pumas and Andrea Rodriguez added the second goal.
Soledad High finished in sixth place in league and finished the year with a 0-0 tie with Stevenson and a 1-1 tie with Pacific Grove. Naylea Jarquin scored the Lady Aztecs goal against the Breakers.
In the Coastal League the Gonzales girls finished in second place in league standings. Last Monday the Spartans defeated Marina 2-0 with goals by Selene Virgen and Susana Tejeda. Ashley Ochoa and Elizabeth Arreola were credited with goals.
On Wednesday night the Spartans had a second shutout of the week, beating York, 2-0. Tejeda and Jazmin Hernandez scored goals and Ochoa and Elida Cholula earned assists.
