RUNNING CHAMPS

SALINAS — For the third straight year the Greenfield boys are cross country champions of the Mission Trail Athletic League. The Bruins had five runners earn All-MTAL medals after out running the rest of the field. Greenfield finished first, followed by Pacific Grove and King City.

“I was surprised by how much our boys have improved the last few weeks,” said Greenfield head coach Angel Villagomez. “A couple of our runners improved their time at Toro Park by a minute or more and that is great at this time of the season.”

Rigo Garcia, Julian Arias, Mauricio Arias, Nahum Valencia, and Daniel Cerna were All-League runners along with Esteban Deniz and Fausto Medina of King City, and Jesus Rodriguez of Soledad.

The Greenfield girls team placed second behind league champion Carmel and Soledad placed third. Maria Hernandez was the first South County runner to cross the finish line placing fourth in a time of 21:01. Hernandez was an All-MTAL along with Ashley Ochoa of Gonzales and Daisy Virgen and Estefania Montel of Soledad. Ochoa placed fifth in a time of 21:13, Virgen placed sixth in 21:21, and Montel was seventh in 21:24. Ochoa, a freshman is the first Gonzales girl since 1998 to earn an All-MTAL medal and certificate in cross country.

Greenfield won the JV boys division and the frosh division and the King City girls won the JV girls division.

The Greenfield boys qualified for the Central Coast Section Division III championships and the King City boys qualified in Division IV. The Greenfield girls will compete in Division III as will the Soledad girls. The King City girls will compete in Division IV. The Greenfield boys are ranked first in Division III.

“As a team we are ready to move up a division,” said Coach Villagomez. “We won the CCS IV Division last season and we like our chances to win Division III on Saturday. Our depth should be enough to win a title.”

Individual boys qualifiers to CCS include Jesus Rodriguez and Victor Carmona of Soledad in Division III and Gonzales Villagomez of Gonzales in Division IV. Ashley Ochoa of Gonzales will compete as in individual in Division IV.

The top three teams and top five individual finishers not on a qualifying team from the CCS finals will qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation State Cross Country Championships that will take place on Nov. 25 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
