KING CITY — Four wins on Saturday earned the King City Lady Mustang volleyball team the championship of the Gold Division at Saturday’s Everett Alvarez Volleyball Tournament in Salinas. King City earned the team title by winning matches against Thomas More of Sunnyvale, North Salinas, Everett Alvarez, and Seaside High Schools.
King City split its Mission Trail Athletic League games last week beating Robert Louis Stevenson 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 and losing 26-16, 25-19, 25-18 to Santa Catalina. Statistical leaders in the win over the Stevenson Pirates were: Grace Shepherd (15 kills, 14 digs); Megan Flores (6 kills, 14 assists); Cassidy Flores (three kills, 10 assists, two blocks); Delany Carroll (three kills, one block); Ivy Hearne (two kills, one ace); Jalen Mendez (one kill); Ana Mendez (10 digs); Julyssa Arreola (three digs three aces).
In the loss to the Santa Catalina Cougars Shepherd finished with 16 kills. Other statistical leaders were: Megan Flores (eight kills, 11 digs, 17 assists); Delany Carroll (three kills, two blocks); Cassidy Flores (one kill, 10 assists); Nancy Andrade (eight digs).
Last night the Lady Mustangs played at Gonzales and will conclude this week’s league schedule tomorrow by hosting the Anzar Hawks.
The Soledad volleyball went .500 for the week with a four-game win over Gonzales and a three-game setback against the Carmel Padres. Soledad won at Gonzales 25-18, 25-20, 19-26, 25-9. In the game with Carmel the scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-22. Soledad hosted Stevenson last night and travel to Pacific Grove to play the Breakers.
Gonzales lost in three to Santa Catalina and the four games to the Aztecs.
“We had great improvement by my underclassmen,” said Gonzales head coach Desiree Baltazar. “Their confidence and chemistry is growing. We also attended the Everett Alvarez Tournament and had great play by Jackie Leon at setter.”
The Greenfield Lady Bruins lost in three games on Oct. 12 to the Marina Mariners. Greenfield plays tomorrow against GB Kirby.
