Jamboree kicks off South County football season

SOUTH COUNTY — The football season begins Friday for South County high schools at the South County Jamboree at War Memorial Stadium. The jamboree will kick off at 5 pm with a JV jamboree followed afterwards by the varsity jamboree.

King City head coach Mac Villanueva has a simple game plan for his program at the jamboree.

“We want them to come out and compete,” said Coach Villanueva. “We are ready to go and have fun and show that we have a good grasp of our basic offensive and defensive schemes.”

The Mustangs begin the non-league schedule on Aug. 25 on the road against the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs. King City is playing this season in the Mountain Division of the Mission Trail Athletic League.

Gonzales High under first-year head coach Arthur Berlanga opens the non-league schedule by hosting Fremont High School of Oakland on Aug. 25 at Dick Force Stadium in Gonzales. The Spartans will play in the Coastal Division of the MTAL.

“We feel pretty confident that we can do well at the jamboree,” said Coach Berlanga. “It is important to stay sharp as we prepare for our home game with Fremont.”

Greenfield Bruin head football coach Ryan Bravo welcomed many new players to his team and just want them to come out and execute at King City.

“I want to see them compete on every play until the whistle blows,” said Bravo. “They should play with great effort and mistake free and have fun in a game-like atmosphere.”

After observing an early bye week the Bruins begin the non-league schedule on Sept. 1 in Watsonville against the Pajaro Valley High School Grizzlies. The Bruins join Gonzales in the MTAL Coastal Division.

The defending Central Coast Section Division IV champion Soledad High Aztecs will be playing in the MTAL Mountain Division and begin the non-league schedule on Aug. 25 by hosting the Seaside High Spartans.

“The jamboree is a good way to start the season as it gives us a chance to take the field against two teams we will play during the season (King City and Greenfield),” said Coach Frankie Berlanga. “With a running clock against each team it will be like playing half a game against our three opponents.”
