Munoz makes return trip to State

GILROY — King City High School distance runner Roman Munoz has qualified for his second State meet in track and field after finishing in the top third in the 1600 at Friday’s Central Coast Section Track and Field Championships at Gilroy High School.

Munoz ran his specialty in 4:16.28 and will compete this weekend at the 99th California Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Munoz led for much of Friday’s race but finished behind race winner Alex Scales of Bellermine (4:13.49) and Jorge Estrella of Andrew Hill (4:14.76). Munoz placed second at last year’s CCS finals in the 1600 in 4:17.81 and placed 26th at the CIF semifinals in 4:18.76. Munoz will run in heat #1 at 5:48 or heat #2 on Friday.

Soledad High’s Daniel Contawe earned a CCS medal for placing fourth in the shot put in the section finals. Contawe threw a personal best of 51-5 and was edged out for the State berth as Taivon Payne of Santa Teresa threw a best of 51-11. Sophomore Jaedon Roberts of St. Ignatius won the event with a mark of 52-10 and Isileli Mapa of Mills placed second with a mark of 52-3.
