Take time to inform yourself

Informed voters are essential to democracy. A Letter to the Editor, “Bait and Switch” (Sept. 19), in last week’s edition made claims that confused rather than clarified. The letter conflated two unrelated matters: the use of state funds on transportation infrastructure and the cuts that will be required in a variety of county transportation services if Proposition 6 passes in November.

The real issue voters need to consider is whether the public good requires all of us to pay for services on which we all depend. Proposition 6 denies that responsibility.

The Road Repair Act of 2017, legislation supported by Assemblymember Caballero and a majority of our elected representatives, will send $30 million in state funding to Monterey County annually. Who doesn’t agree our roads desperately need long deferred maintenance? County residents and its many visitors will all benefit from our state’s commitment to upgrade its neglected highways and byways, which are used by all of us.

Please take the time to inform yourself, and think carefully when you exercise your right to influence public policy with your vote.

Dog days of summer

South County Animal Rescue (SCAR) was founded in January 2016 by local animal lovers who saw the need in our communities and filled in some of the gaps. To date, around 400 dogs and cats — that is 1,600 paws — have been re-homed or transferred to other no-kill facilities by a small group of passionate volunteers.

We are proud to announce that on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., SCAR will be hosting the first Dog Days of Summer in downtown Soledad at the Cesar Chavez Park on Front Street.

Dogs on leashes and responsible owners are all welcome to come and enjoy food, fun, raffles, vendors, music, bounce houses and more, all to benefit your local animal rescue.

For more information, contact Vince at 831-277-3496. Thanks, in advance, to all who come out to support this wonderful cause — and have a fabulous time.

Lucy Jensen
President, South County Animal Rescue
