Soledad only 1 win from title


SOLEDAD — The Soledad Aztecs needed a win yesterday over the Pacific Grove Breakers to assure themselves the outright Mission Trail Athletic League baseball title. Soledad was 14-1-1 to start the week with a two-game lead over the second place Carmel Padres.

The Aztecs won on the road and away against the Greenfield Bruins and won a non-league game against the host Salinas High Cowboys in Salinas. Soledad began the week with an 11-3 win over the Cowboys followed by 12-0 and 11-1 wins over the Bruins.

Last Tuesday in Salinas Joel Barroso earned the pitching win with seven innings, allowing three earned runs and finishing with three strikeouts. Barroso helped his own cause with two hits and three runs batted in. Isaac Lopez, Ben Pajas and Jakob Melendrez combined for six hits and two RBIs.

In the 12-0 win over Greenfield Melendrez led the Soledad offense with three hits and Andrew Alonzo had two hits and produced four RBIs. Chris Villarreal added two hits, and two RBIs and Anthony Ramirez was credited with two RBIs. Soledad completed their offensive showing with road win at Greenfield. Andru Holguin earned the win on the mound with relief help from Pajas. Alonzo, Barroso, and Pajas had two hits and Lopez had two RBIs.

Soledad completes the regular season tomorrow at Pacific Grove.
