Soledad boys win close game with Hawks

SOLEDAD — Isaac Lopez and Billy Hollman scored 21 and 22 points each to lead the Soledad Aztec basketball to a 70-64 win against the Oakwood High School Hawks last Tuesday in Morgan Hill.

Lopez had a stellar shooting night with five 3-point baskets while Hollman continues to be Soledad’s top scorer.

“Isaac Lopez broke out of a shooting slump to lead us to victory against Oakwood and sparked us early against Trinity,” said Aztec head coach Nick Twitchell. “We have a big week ahead with three games starting with Greenfield.”

The Aztecs won the JV contest 68-51 over the Hawks. Josiah Freeman had 29 points and 11 rebounds and Adrian De Anda added 11 points.

At home on Thursday four Aztecs scored in double-figures in 75-38 rout of the visiting Trinity Christian Warriors. Lopez led Soledad with 14 points and Hollman added 13 points. Beto Tinajero and Adrian Martinez contributed to the win with 11 points each respectively. Soledad improved to 5-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and has an 8-10 overall mark. Carmel and Pacific Grove lead the league with 6-1 records.

The Soledad frosh boys team defeated St. Abraham 59-40 in their only game of the week. Top scorers for the Aztec frosh were Lorenzo Santistevan with 18 points and Johnny Carrillo with 14 points. Santistevan was successful on four 3-point baskets and Carrillo added four 3-point baskets of his own. Zach Velasquez joined his teammates in double-figures in scoring with 11 points. Jesus Ruacho added seven points with two 3-point baskets.

“Our top rebounder was Isaac Ventura,” said Soledad frosh head coach Auduro Mellin. “All around hustle and timely steals that caused turnovers were exhibited by Zach Velasquez and Robert Orozco.”

The Aztec teams hosted Greenfield on Monday, travel to King City today and host Carmel on Friday.
