SOLEDAD — Soledad Police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting and attempted homicide that occurred Tuesday morning in the 1700 block of Vosti Avenue in Soledad.
On Dec. 12 at about l l :30 a.m., the 54-year-old Hispanic victim was sitting in the driver's seat of his vehicle in his driveway when the incident occurred. The suspect walked up to the victim's parked car, brandished a firearm and then fired several rounds into the right front passenger side of the vehicle.
Fortunately, none of the rounds struck the victim who heard the shots being fired and immediately ducked down behind the steering wheel for cover, police said. The suspect was last seen fleeing on foot from the scene and running westbound on Fifth Street.
While officers were en route to the scene, a description of the suspect was broadcast and the initial arriving officers located a person matching the description approximately one block away from the shooting scene. When the officers approached the suspect in their vehicles, he immediately fled on foot and ran back toward the area where the shooting originally occurred.
Officers pursued the subject on foot for a short distance before he barricaded himself inside an occupied dwelling back on Vosti Avenue.
With the assistance of officers from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office and the King City and Greenfield police departments, officers quickly set up a perimeter and surrounded the residence. Ultimately, officers were able to enter the home where they located the suspect hiding in the master bedroom of the residence.
The suspect, Arturo Calderon, 37, was safely taken into custody and several witnesses later positively identified him as being the person responsible for the shooting. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail for attempted murder, parole violation, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and other criminal violations.
The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
