SOLEDAD — City of Soledad recently honored the Soledad High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets and advisers.

The NJROTC team leaders, who represent the school at competitions in Las Vegas and San Jose, were present July 11 to receive the certificates.

According to Captain Pete Gomez, the NJROTC put in more than 4,000 hours of community service during the school year. Only two schools were selected by the U.S. Navy as a distinguished unit, one was Soledad High School NJROTC and the other was Turlock High School.

“If you go to any event in Soledad, it seems like the NJROTC is there, and I’m always impressed by them,” said Council Member Carla Stewart. “They were at the memorial service at the cemetery and (did) a great job.”

Gomez said the NJROTC finished the school year with 180 cadets. The program plans to add another instructor for the upcoming school year.
